Research

Index (Nov 2015) at the Crypt Gallery

To create site responsive work I visited the Camden Local Studies and Archive Centre at Holborn Library to research the location.  Handling microfiche and microfilm was surprisingly enjoyable, a tactile and laborious search process in the Google age.  The wealth of historical information from seemingly ephemeral newspaper documents was fascinating.

Likewise, visiting the St Ives Archive in 2015 there was a wealth of visual information available.

Organisation & Project Management I

MFA Final Show 2016 - Joint project manager with Susan Walker:

  • Designed a project timeline and created sub-groups (e-catalogue, marketing, events etc) to deliver each task.

  • Managed the groups, ensuring the class had appropriate information about the whole project and was clear about individual responsibilities.

  • Communicated professionally with our course leader and senior college staff about issues arising.  For example:

    • securing extra funding for a one day seminar event at the show

    • negotiating to have the MFA show shop in the college library

    • the joint organisation of the Private View alongside the graduating BA cohort.

  • Balanced these responsibilities alongside delivering on my own art practice for the Final Show.

I installed a work, ‘Wallpaper,’ on time for the show in a side room.  Unfortunately the landlord’s redecorating team accidentally removed and destroyed the work shortly after installation.

Alongside reflecting on the artistic implications, I had to consider the practicalities for the show.

I communicated professionally and positively with in-house curator at KTHC to negotiate what alternative piece could be put up in its place, and to consider reclaiming the cost of the damaged work from the trust.

For the Index show the octahedron shape of my piece was key, and I wanted to construct it in transparent acrylic. But this simple shape turned out to be complex because of the need for accurate internal angles to mitre together.

Ensuring I worked to the show deadlines, and not having the budget for fabrication, I instead made it from MDF and car spray paint to achieve the desired clean, high spec finish.

PARK15

This annual exhibition has been taking place in Cannizaro Park since the 1970s and in May 2015 attracted nearly 1,000 visitors. I was the sole intern working with the curator until the show opened.

  • Exhibition materials (poster and map) Sourced printer, edited the artwork in Adobe Illustrator to be “print-ready,” ensured final materials were delivered to site.

  • Marketing and social media Updated the event website/blog, promoted the show through university channels, used social media to promote the event to local organisations.

  • Event Management & Private View Coordinated with the college to order refreshments, oversaw their delivery and the setup of the on-site bar, ensured cash profits returned to the college.

  • Site Management Onsite for the full four day exhibition, managed a team of six interns, interacted with school parties and the general public, keyholder for the overnight storage space.

  • Collaborative performance artwork Took part in Annalee Soskin’s ‘Park Ranger Squad.’ Wore a hood and roved the Park for the duration of the show weekend, providing information and rescuing those in distress.

Professional Network

I have been identifying and reaching out to artists and others who seem to have similar interests.

I hope to develop a sustainable network of interesting conversations around mine and others’ practices.

Collaboration

For PARK16 I proposed a group performance.

  • I included a budget for costumes and materials, a timeline for the production of the work, a call for volunteer performers and consideration of the Health and Safety aspects of interacting with the public.

  • Onsite I coordinated a group of volunteers to deliver my artwork.  This allowed me to experience working with others on my ideas whilst retaining some oversight of the final piece.

The SHIFT exhibition was a constantly moving exhibition as the curation of the show changed each day in response to audience feedback.

  • Discussed and experimented with colleagues each day about changes, moving both wall and floor based work.

  • Tested the conventions of a standard gallery hang and altering the conversations between works.

MFA Degree Show

  • June 2016 I worked with Liz Morison to curate the space we were allocated for the Final MFA Show at WCA.  We collaborated positively together to balance our mix of 3D, wall based and film work to ensure all was shown to best advantage.

Joint proposal for Hotel Elephant with Mark Goldby

  • Proposed a one day residency and event at on the theme of power and control.

  • Took care to communicate a clear and concise proposal.

  • Whilst it was not accepted on this occasion, I valued the creative conversation with Mark and the different perspective it allowed me on my own practice.
